フィリピンのあの台風から今日5月6日で半年になります。

Today marks 6 months since The Philippines experienced its deadliest typhoon on record, Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).
_MG_5029フィリピンのタクラバンの空港に降り立つと、爆弾で完全に破壊されたような光景が目の前に広がります。窓もドアも屋根も壁も壊れたまま、そして空港内のサインはスプレーで書かれています。私たちはどんなに打ちのめされても立ち直ろうとする彼らのエネルギーに圧倒されます。

As you first get off of the plane in Tacloban, you are greeted with an airport that looks like it has been completely bombed out. No windows or doors, missing roofs and walls and spray painted signs - life has continued and the resilience is wonderful to see and experience.
taclobanタクラバンとその周辺の村々を通ると、我々が2011年の3月に経験したあの時の被災状況と似た光景が広がります。どこも破壊されている中でも時には美しい光景も残されているのに気づきます。

Driving through Tacloban and the surrounding villages, you see the similarities of damage that Japan also experienced in 2011. Although there is destruction all around, you can see the beauty that still remains.
_MG_5086私たちは夕方Center for Changeに到着しました。このセンターは孤児や子供達が心身ともに守られ、共に暮らし、教育を受けるコミュニティーです。家庭環境の中で生活するという趣旨のもと、各子供はHouse Parentと呼ばれる親に当たる人と家で生活するのです。
We arrived at the Center for Change late in the evening. The Center for Change is a community where orphans and children at risk are housed, clothed, educated and cared for.  Each child lives in a house with a House Parent who cares for them in a home environment.
IMG_5303このセンターの創始者、マーガレット・パシュレーさんは6ヶ月待ちに待った電気がつくよう変圧器が与えられるよう願っていたところ、丁度私たちが到着したその日に、変圧器が設置されることになり、私達もその様子を見ることが出来ました。スタッフも子供達ももちろん大喜び！毎月行われる誕生日会の前に電気がついたのです！
Margaret Pashley, founder of the Center for Change, shared that they were hoping to receive a new transformer which would give them electricity for the first time in 6 months. Sure enough, as we pulled up to the gates, you could see men installing the transformer! As you can imagine, everyone was excited.  Electricity was restored just in time for their monthly Family Birthday Celebrations. This made the celebrations all the more exciting!
_MG_5318次の日、私たちはセンターが取り組んでいる子供達や近隣の人々の家の再建の進捗状況を見聞できました。確実に進んではいますが、まだまだする事が山積しているという印象を受けました。

The next day we were able to see the progress of the rebuilding of the houses for the children and surrounding neighbors. The progress is great but there is still much need.

ヤーンアライブのメンバーたちが編んだブランケットを子供達に渡し、どこの誰がどんな気持ちで編んだのかを説明しました。その日は気温が36度もあるような灼熱の中でしたが、子供達は喜んで私たちの話に耳を傾けてくれました。
It then came time to pass out the blankets which the ladies of Yarn Alive created! Although it was a blistering 36C, the kids in each house excitedly gathered around as we explained where the blankets came from and the love that we wanted to share with them.
一番先ににブランケットを手にした女の子は自分の好きな色のブランケットを選び、嬉しそうに飛び回り、ブランケットで自分の体を包むと、自分のベットの方に走って行きベットの上に広げたのです。
The first girl to received a blanket happily picked out her choice of color and jumped around the house in joy. She wrapped herself in her new blanket and then ran to her bed to place her new treasure.
そして、その女の子はお隣の家々に行って、子供達にブランケットを渡すのを手伝ってくれました。
She then helped us carry the blankets from house to house.

私たちは猛暑でまいってしまいそうだったのですが、子供達は皆受け取ったブランケットで体を包み「ありがとう」と嬉しそうに言いました。12月頃は寒くなるのでブランケットが温めてくれるだろうし、カラフルなブランケットは家の中を明るくしてくれるとも言っていました。
Although I felt like dying in the heat, each girl and boy wrapped themselves in their new blankets and shared how thankful they were to the ladies. They explained that particularly in December, it gets very cool so the blankets will be perfect for keeping them warm plus it adds a little more color to each of their shared bedrooms.

子供達の年齢は5歳から20歳。彼らの笑顔と嬉しそうな様子は周りのものたちの心をも明るくしてくれます。短い間でしたが、彼らとともに過ごすことでき本当に光栄でした。このプロジェクト実現のためにヤーンアライブの活動をご支援してくださった多くの皆様に改めて心から御礼申し上げます。
The kids, aged between  5 to 20 years old, were so beautiful. Their laughter and excitement for life was infectious.   It was such a privilege to be part of their world, even if it was just for a short time. Thank you for your donations of yarn to the ladies of Yarn Alive who were able to make this project become a reality!

UFO

これはチュニジアのかぎ針編みのアフガンの未完成品です。完成させるためには繋ぎ合わせ が要るのですが、さてどのようにしましょうか？皆で思案中。 UFO Unfinished Object (Project). Many times were are given UFOs. This is an unfinished Tunisian crochet afghan. All that remains is the colorful cross stitch and assembly. What shall we do??

お祝いの時パート２　A season to celebrate Part II

ヤーンアライブはただ編み物をするだけの場では なく、共に時間を過ごし分かち合う場です。今日は、水曜日のクラスでメンバーたちが分かち合い、感謝し合いました。 Yarn Alive is not just about knitting and crocheting, but about spending time together and sharing life. Today, it was the Wednesday's class to celebrate and share life!

お祝いの時　A season to celebrate

今日は、ヤーンアライブのいままでの活動を振り返り、多くの支援者に支えられてきたことに感謝 しました。
Today we took the time to just celebrate. To look back at all that has been achieved and be thankful for all that has been given.
テディーさんは桜シーズンのお祝いについて話しました。桜はシンボルです。咲いて散る桜は新しい命と美しさを表します。

Teddy shared about the celebration of the season of Cherry Blossoms. Cherry blossoms in Japan are richly symbolic. Cherry blossoms symbolize the transience of life - extreme beauty and quick death. But we like to think of cherry blossoms as a reminder of new life, a new season with incredible beauty.

Odango - A Japanese Spring dessert

今週はイースター。新しい命を祝う時です。It's also a time to celebrate Easter and the new life that it represents.

特に、フィリピン・プロジェクトに関し、活動は少し遅れ気味ですが、5月初旬には昨年の台風被災者80人の子供達にブランケットを送れるまでに至ったことに感謝しました。私たちの「愛」が日本からフィリピンに届きますように。多くの愛を与えられてきた私たちが今度はそのお返しとして与える立場になれたことに感謝します！

And, we also celebrated the Philippines Project!  Although delayed in sending the blankets, we plan to now send them in the first week of May. 80 young boys and girls in Leyte, Philippines who were affected by Typhoon Heiyan, will receive some love from Japan!  We love creating and we love giving! We think that is worth celebrating.

Amazing Angora

沢山の毛糸を送ってくださり、 技術的にもいろいろ教えてくださっているいのえさんという支援者がいらっしゃいます。これは、いのえさんのアドバイスを受けてあいかわさんが編んだアンゴラ混じりのセーターです。素敵でしょ？ Our long time supporter and friend Inoesan, has donated so many boxes of yarn and taught us many new techniques. For example, check out this Angora blend felted sweater that Aikawasan made.
