We are so grateful for Michiyosan traveling all the way to Shichigahama to visit us. Our good friend, Shimohirosan was able to travel up here to be with us today as well! We are so thankful for these 2 ladies and all their support over the years!
また今日はモザンビークのニット帽寄付の報告も聞けました。配布時の帽子をかぶる子供達の写真をみて笑いあり、拍手ありの感動のときでした。配布して下さった綾子・ローレンスのレポートも聞けました。彼女は現在ネパールにて私たちのニット帽は配布しています。
Today we were able to also celebrate our Hat Project to Mozambique. We laughed and clapped as we watched the photos of everyone making hats and then seeing the kids in Mozambique actually wearing them! It was also great to hear the written report from Ayako Lawrence, our correspondent who delivered the hats. She is currently in Nepal delivering more hats for us!

We were so fortunate to be able to make hats for the children in Mozambique last month. Ayako, who hand delivered the hats for us, was going to share with us tomorrow about the trip. However she has been called to Nepal to help with the disaster there. She will be carrying our hats there as well! So tomorrow we will show the ladies the pictures of the children in Mozambique and share the letter that Ayako has written about the trip. We are very excited to have Michiyo join us tomorrow as well! Stay tuned for pictures!!
先月、モザンビークの子供達のために帽子を編むことができました。その帽子をモザンビークまで届けてくださったあやこさんが明日のクラスでモザンビークでの様子を報告してくださる予定でしたが、急にネパールの地震被災者支援に呼ばれ、クラスに来れなくなってしまいました。でも、ネパールへも私たちが編んだ帽子を持って行ってくださるそうです！
ということで、明日のクラスでは、あやこさんからの手紙とモザンビークの子供達の写真を紹介します。みちよさんもクラスにきてくださるそうですので、お楽しみに！

We are so excited to announce that Yarn Alive has been granted permission from Miyagi Prefecture to build a Yarn Alive house in the local area on land that we have rented from the town of Shichigahama. It has taken many months to receive this permission, but Yarn Alive now has the go ahead to build! We are thrilled that not only does Yarn Alive have a permanent home but that we will also provide a community center for the surrounding area. The Yarn Alive House will have a classroom large enough for people to gather together for classes. There will also be a large storeroom for the donated yarn and supplies as well as a lending library of craft books for the growing community of knitters in this town. There will also be a large kitchen to be able to serve tea and host future events.
七ヶ浜町からヤーンアライブの専用の建物「ヤーンアライブハウス」のための土地の使用許可を受けていたのですが、建物を建設するためには宮城県からの許可が必要でした。何ヶ月も申請を続け、いよいよ今回、許可を得ることができました！ヤーンアライブの活動のため長期的な使用が出来るだけでなく、地域の人々のためのコミュニティーセンターとしても利用していただけるようになります。この建物には、メンバーが集まって活動するのに十分な大きさの教室と、寄付をしていただいた毛糸や道具を保管するための倉庫、そして増え続けている地域の編み物愛好者のための図書室も備えられます。今後の活動やイベントのためのキッチンも予定されています。
We have felt the need for a Yarn Alive house for quite some time now. It has been heavy on our hearts that a time would come when the women in Yarn Alive would have to move out of temporary housing and go back to the neighborhoods that they came from before the tsunami. For various reasons, these women had to make new friends these past four years. Although it is exciting that they are finally moving out of temporary housing it does come with side affects. It means that they cannot be together as a group anymore. As we have seen in other areas, isolation, depression and ultimately suicide escalates. We need a central place where we can gather these women and continue to build purpose and life into each one of them.
私たちは長い間、このようなヤーンアライブハウスが必要であると感じていました。震災から時が経つにつれ、仮設住宅に住んでいる女性たちも被災前の居住区へ戻らなければならない日が近づいていました。この女性たちはこの４年間の間に新しい友人たちができました。仮設住宅から移動できることは喜ばしいことではありますが、それは多々にして、それまでと同じグループの友人たちと一緒に過ごすことが難しくなるということも意味します。他の被災地では、孤独感や鬱に悩む人の増加、そして自殺者も増えたと聞いています。ヤーンアライブのみんなが続けて一緒に集まり、日々の目的を見いだし続けることができる中心的な場所が必要としています。
It will also be wonderful to have all our supplies in one place and to be able to distribute yarn to many more people who want to make things with us to send to other people in need. In the past four years we have seen how our projects of making things for Disaster Relief, Syrian refugees, people in nursing homes, babies in hospitals, hats for school children in Mozambique, etc, has helped our members have a purpose in their lives. We feel like we have received so much from others and now we can give to someone else in need. We really believe that we can have a lot of activities going from this special place. We are also excited of the prospect of extending our vision to other areas of Japan and overseas!
また、毛糸や道具をまとめて保管して、同じ場所からそれらを他の方々に送ったり、作品を編 んで必要のある人々のもとに届けることができれば素晴らしいと思います。この４年間の間に、被災支援のために作品を送ったり、シリアやヨルダンの難民の支 援をしたり、老人施設や病院の新生児への支援、モザンビークの子どもたちのための帽子を贈ったりしてきました。このようなプロジェクトを通して、メンバー のみんなが生き甲斐を見出す手助けとなっています。私たちは国内国外の多くの方々からたくさんのものを受けたからこそ、今度は必要のある方々に何かを捧げ ていくことができるのだと思います。このスペシャルな場所を通して、いろいろな活動を発展させていくことができると信じています。私たちのビジョンを国内 国外にさらに広げることを楽しみにしています！

若葉区にある特別養護老人ホーム杜の里に、ようやくAFWJとヤーンアライブが協力した手編みブランケットを届けることが出来て素晴らしかったです。
It was wonderful to finally visit the Wakabayashi Elderly Home and distribute the blankets from AFWJ and Yarn Alive.
4年前の津波の時、海から約2キロのところにあるこの老人ホームに水は容赦なく腰の高さまで押し寄せてきました。当時1階にた50名はすぐに2階に避難し、すでに2階にいた50名に加えられました。幸いなことに、あの災害時でも皆無事だったそうです。それ以来、津波被害のあった1階の部屋は使っていないそうです。新しい施設が建設中で、来月には移れることを心待ちにしているとのことでした。
Four years ago, during the tsunami, this elderly home was flooded with 3 feet of water from the ocean which is 2 kms away. 50 people were quickly evacuated to the second floor where there was already an additional 50 people. Thankfully, everyone was safe during that terrifying time. However since then, the entire bottom floor has not been suitable to use due to the water damage. So they are very excited to move to a new building next month.

昨年11月に地元の七ヶ浜町の老人ホームを訪問したことをご報告しましたが、覚えていらっしゃいますか？あの時は60枚のブランケットをお年寄りたちにお届けしました。実は、今日また伺ってきました。でもブランケットのお届けではなく、今日から手編みのクラスを始めたのです。今日のクラスのことを思うと昨夜はとても興奮してなかなか寝付くことができませんでした。とあるご婦人が語っておられました。お年寄りたちがおしゃべりを楽しみながら手を動かす手編みのクラスを始めることができとても嬉しいです！
Remember last year in November when we visited the local elderly home in Shichigahama? We distributed 60 blankets to the residents there. Well today we returned but not to hand out more blankets. Instead, today we started classes so that these people have something to do with their hands and minds. One lady said that she could hardly sleep last night because she was so excited about today's class! It's so wonderful to be able to start this new class!

金曜日にようやく日赤病院を訪問し赤ちゃん用品を届けることができました。思えば、1年あまり前、未熟児たちのために赤ちゃん用品を編めないかと皆で話し合い始めました。3年ほど前に友人が双子を出産し、男の子は残念ながら亡くなってしまいましたが、女の子は生きるために懸命に闘い、生きることができたということを聞いていました。そして、もし同じような状況にいる赤ちゃんや家族に手編みの赤ちゃん用品をプレゼントできたらどんなに素晴らしいことかとその友人は話してくれました。日赤病院の看護婦さんのご協力で、どんな赤ちゃん用品が喜ばれるのか皆で話し合い、このプロジェクトが始まりました。
It was so wonderful to finally deliver our baby goods to Red Cross Hospital on Friday. Nearly a year ago, we started to explore the idea of creating baby wear for premature babies. A personal friend had gone through a difficult time with giving birth to twins about 3 years ago. Sadly the baby boy did not survive but the baby girl did but had to fight for her life. The mother shared that it would be such a blessing to those little babies and their families to have handmade items given to them! They would feel loved and thought of. So with the help of her nurse (and friend) during such a difficult time, we were able to work out the fine details of what would be best to make.
初めて日赤を訪問した時、未熟児たちにはガーゼとテープだけが使われているのを見ました。そこは色、カラーが 存在しない、白の無色の世界でした。そこで、私たちは殺菌が容易にでき、赤ちゃんたちが身につけられるカラフルな毛糸を選び、ベスト、帽子、靴下、手袋などを編み始めました。また、米国オハイオ州のジュディー・シューマンさんが中心になって編んでくださったブランケットも一緒に届けることにしました。
On our first visit to the hospital, we found that they were only able to use gauze and tape on the babies. And there was no color! So in the end, we were able to make the most colorful vests, hats, booties, and gloves that could be easily sterilised and worn. We were also able to hand out blankets that were organized by Judy Shuman and given to us from Suffield Fellowship Church in Ohio, USA.
日赤病院を訪問した時、看護婦さんたちがまるでクリスマスが来たみたいだと喜んでくださいました。そして赤ちゃんたちに帽子や手袋をはめたりしてくださいました。部屋中がカラーと生命力で満ちパッと明るくなりました。喜びに満ちた素晴らしい時間でした！
When we arrived at the hospital, all the nurses gathered round. They "oohed and ahhed" as we pulled out the colorful goods. They kept saying it was like Christmas. They gathered a few babies and tried on the outfits which fit perfectly! It was such a beautiful moment. And so wonderful to see color and life!
病院からもうすでに素晴らしい報告が届いています。看護婦さんによりますと全てのICUにいる赤ちゃんにブランケットを一枚づつ配ったそうです。その光景は素敵で夜の当番に来た看護婦さん達は驚いていた様です。私たちを手伝って下さった看護婦さんがケアーしている男の子の赤ちゃんいます。看護婦さんは彼のために青い編み物の靴下を選びました。後に親が訪れに来ると、赤ちゃんを見て母親は泣いていました。すると父親は青い靴下に気づき、母親に知らせると、母親は微笑みました。私たちの願いが届いた様です。
We have already heard reports from the hospital about the difference that this simple act has made. The nurse who helped organize everything shared that they added a blanket to every baby in ICU that afternoon. She said that it looked beautiful and that the evening nurse was so surprised on her arrival. Everything looked different and better. She also shared about the baby boy that she is caring for. That morning she had chosen blue socks for him. In the afternoon, the parents came for the first time to see him since birth. "The mother cried a lot when she saw the tiny premature baby. So intent was she on the state of the child that she didn't notice anything different about what he was wearing. However the father noticed that the baby was wearing the cute blue socks and told the mother, and then she smiled." She believes that our hearts touched their hearts.
私たちにこのような人のために何かをする機会を与えてくださったことに心から感謝します。そしてこれからもこの活動を続けていきたいと思っています。

It was wonderful to attend The Association Of Foreign Wives of Japanese (AFWJ) National Convention on Sunday! They blessed us with beautiful handmade blankets that the ladies made. Rainbow was their theme this year so all the blankets are full of color! We will be taking these blankets along with some Yarn Alive blankets to an area nearby that was affected by the tsunami 4 years ago.
